TMJ Disorders

Our clinic offers treatments for temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, a common condition affecting the jaw joint and surrounding muscles.

The oral and maxillofacial surgeon plays an important role in the treatment of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs), which are conditions affecting the temporomandibular joints and the muscles that control jaw movement. This can manifest as various symptoms ranging from orofacial pain, interference or limitation in opening, locking in a closed or open position, or clicking and popping of the joint. The oral and maxillofacial surgeon is trained to evaluate and diagnose TMDs using clinical examination techniques, medical imaging (such as X-rays, MRI, or CT scans), and sometimes specialized tests to assess the function of the temporomandibular joint.

In many cases, TMDs can be treated with conservative approaches such as physiotherapy exercises, lifestyle modifications, occlusal splints, anti-inflammatory medications, or muscle relaxants. Botox injections can also be considered in the treatment of severe bruxism or debilitating muscle pain.

However, some TMDs may require a surgical approach due to their nature or the significant impact they have on function. As a general rule, the surgeon tends to choose the minimally invasive approach that is most appropriate in the circumstances. This may involve a simple joint injection, camera surgery (arthroscopy; an approach that allows access and manipulation of the joint contents without having to open it), or in some cases, open surgery (arthrotomy). Drs. Poirier and Badri have expertise in these fields of practice through their experience and specialization.
