Oral and Intravenous Sedation
Our clinic offers oral and intravenous sedation options to help patients relax and feel comfortable during surgical procedures.
Procedure Overview
It is normal to feel some anxiety about your surgery. This may even be the reason why your procedure is being performed by a member of our team. Your surgeons have received extensive training to safely provide you with different sedation modalities. Oral and intravenous sedation are two methods used in oral and maxillofacial surgery to help patients remain calm and comfortable during a surgical procedure. Oral Sedation: Oral sedation involves administering medications orally to induce a state of relaxation and drowsiness in the patient. These medications can be taken in the form of tablets or liquid. The medications used for oral sedation generally have calming and anti-anxiety effects. During the surgical procedure, the patient remains awake but relaxed, allowing them to respond to the surgeon's instructions while staying comfortable. Oral sedation is often used for minor procedures. Intravenous Sedation: Intravenous sedation involves administering medications directly into the bloodstream via an intravenous infusion. These medications act quickly to induce a state of semi-consciousness and relaxation in the patient. Intravenous sedation is often used for more complex or invasive procedures in oral and maxillofacial surgery. It allows the patient to remain comfortable and calm during the procedure while reducing anxiety and minimizing the perception of pain. Intravenous sedation also induces amnesia for the event, so you will only vaguely remember your surgery. Intravenous access also allows for the administration of medications that better control pain and prevent post-operative nausea. It sometimes avoids the need for general anesthesia while having a shorter recovery time.
