Post-Operative Care Guide
Learn how to care for yourself after oral and maxillofacial surgery with our post-operative care guide.
Specific post-operative instructions for your surgery will be provided to you and the person accompanying you, and a reminder sheet will also be given to help you remember them.
In general:
- Pain management: Take the pain medication prescribed by your surgeon as instructed. Do not exceed the recommended dosage and do not use other medications without consulting your surgeon.
- Bleeding control: In case of excessive bleeding, apply direct pressure to the area using a sterile gauze pad. Avoid vigorously rinsing your mouth, spitting, or using a straw to prevent disturbing the blood clots. If bleeding persists, contact your surgeon immediately.
- Diet: Follow your surgeon's specific recommendations regarding your post-operative diet. It is often recommended to consume cold/warm, soft, or liquid foods for the first few days after surgery, and then gradually introduce more solid foods as comfortable. Avoid grainy foods that could get into the surgical sites or spicy foods that may irritate them.
- Oral hygiene: Keep your mouth clean by following your surgeon's instructions. This should include gently brushing your teeth and tongue, as well as using recommended mouth rinse solutions.
- Rest and activity: Rest sufficiently for the first few days after surgery and avoid strenuous physical activities. Follow your surgeon's specific recommendations regarding the resumption of daily activities and exercise.
- Swelling and bruising: Expect some degree of swelling and bruising around the surgical area, proportional to the nature of your surgery. Use cold compresses or wrapped ice packs to reduce swelling, as recommended by your surgeon.
- Medical follow-up: Be sure to schedule and attend all follow-up appointments with your surgeon to monitor your recovery and detect any potential issues.
- Signs of infection: Watch for signs of infection such as fever, severe pain, redness, or excessive swelling, and immediately contact your surgeon if you experience these symptoms.
It is important to carefully follow all post-operative instructions provided by your surgeon to optimize your recovery and minimize complications. If you have any questions or concerns during your recovery period, do not hesitate to contact your surgeon for further advice.
